Cheng Zhiyong often went hungry in high school due to his family's poverty. His class teacher noticed this and frequently invited him home for meals, a gesture that warmed his heart. After becoming a teacher himself, Cheng secretly decided to pass on these heartwarming meals to his own students.

46-year-old Cheng Zhiyong was born in Fengshu Village, Dawang Town, Huangshi City. During Cheng’s childhood, his father’s illness prevented him from working in the fields, leaving the burden of supporting the eight-member family entirely upon his mother.
Recalling events from more than 30 years ago, Cheng's eyes reddened as he recounted to Jimu News reporters how as the second oldest of five siblings, he started cooking for his family since the third grade of primary school. With the family burdened by life’s expenses, he often went hungry as a child. After graduating from junior high school in 1994, Cheng was admitted to Yangxin No.1 High School with excellent grades, but to ease the family's financial strain, he decided to drop out and work odd jobs on construction sites in Wuhan with his cousin.
"You're a better student than me—go back to school and you'll definitely get into university." A year later, Cheng's elder brother found him at a construction site in Wuhan and escorted him back home. His brother had ever been admitted to a university in Wuhan and thought it unfortunate that his younger brother would miss out on an education. And so, a year after dropping out, Cheng Zhiyong returned to the classroom.

"Back then, living expenses for students at rural high schools were really low. We all had to bring our own food and prepare a meal while at school." Cheng Zhiyong said. He did not return to Yangxin No.1 High School but instead attended Taizi Town High School which is more than 10 kilometers from Dawang Town. "I was most afraid of going to school on rainy days." Cheng told a reporter from Jimu News. His elder brother was in college, and his younger siblings were also in school. His parents relied on farming a few acres of poor land, making life extremely tough. In winter, he would carry more than 10 kilograms of sweet potatoes to school every week and walked for over three hours to get there. For three years in high school, he ate steamed sweet potatoes twice a day, and occasionally added a little rice to his dinner with pickled vegetables. In summer, he ate dried sweet potatoes for all three meals.

"During my three years of high school, what I dreaded most was when the school urged for tuition fees at the end of each semester." Cheng said. Over the three years of high school, he paid less than 300 yuan in tuition, making him the student who owed the most fees. Once, the principal called him to the office and told him to go home to get money to pay the tuition, but Cheng knew he could not get any money at home. "If you can't get the tuition, you'd better come back to class soon." his class teacher, KeYousong, said to him. "When I heard those words, my heart warmed, and tears uncontrollably welled up in my eyes..." Recalling the scene, his voice choked up several times.
"Come to my home for dinner tonight." Instead of being asked about the tuition, what Cheng Zhiyong heard was invitation to a meal when he saw his class teacher Ke Yousong again at school. Cheng said that afterward, his class teacher would periodically invite him to his home for a nice meal, which were the most delicious and heartwarming meals he ever had.

In 1998, Cheng Zhiyong was admitted to Hubei Normal University. After graduating in 2002, he was hired as a teacher at Yangxin No.1 High School. "A good teacher can change a student's fate." Cheng said. If it hadn’t been for the principal and head teacher during his three years of high school, he might have dropped out again. Inspired by his teachers, when time came to fill out college applications, Cheng resolutely applied for only normal universities—he wanted to be a teacher and pass on the love.
In 2003, Cheng became a class teacher at Yangxin No.1 High School. A student surnamed Yu in his class came from a poor family in a remote town in Yangxin. The student was introverted, so Cheng took the initiative to invite him to his home for dinner. Gradually, the child opened up his heart. After that, Cheng often brought students home to cook for them. "At that time, I was not well-off, and I still had a mortgage to pay." Cheng said. His wife, Liu Yufang, is also a teacher and currently teaches at a primary school in Yangxin.
As living standards have improved, the significance of inviting students home for a meal has greatly diminished. Since 2013, Cheng Zhiyong set a new criterion: students who made academic improvement could enjoy meal cooked by the teacher himself. Being invited to enjoy dinner at the teacher's home has become an honor. From 2003 to the present, he has been providing these heartwarming meals for 23 years.

"At the time of college entrance exam registration, I still owed my head teacher 200 yuan, but his wife said I didn't need to repay it." While sorting vegetables after returning home, Cheng Zhiyong was interviewed by a Jimu News reporter. "I believe that this debt can be repaid in another way; I hope this kindness can be passed on continuously."

"This is my fourth time dining at the teacher's home, and I really love the atmosphere here." Guo Junxi told the interviewer happily.

"All 64 students in my class have eaten the meal cooked by me." Cheng Zhiyong said, Every time he sees the students enjoying their meal, all his exhaustion vanishes.
